Dr John Allan
Dr. John Allan founded the IVF unit, Qld IVF Services at The Wesley
Hospital in 1988. In 1999, the unit was purchased by the Uniting Church
of Australia and became The Wesley IVF Service. Dr Allan was then
appointed Director of Reproductive Medicine at The Wesley Hospital and
Medical Director of the Wesley IVF unit..
The Wesley unit combined with Monash IVF in 2004 to create the current
Joint Venture Wesley Monash IVF of which Dr Allan remains Medical
Director.
RESEARCH AND EDUCATION
In 1997 he developed a new method of freezing testicular biopsy sperm
and this has greatly improved outcomes in the treatment of male
infertility. John remains actively involved in research and journal
publications in order to maintain the best quality of care for the
unit’s patients.
Over the past decade, collaborative research with QUT into the effect of
Chlamydia and Urea Plasma on both male and female infertility has also
been published.
His commitment to the value of research has seen him appointed as a
member of the Wesley Research Institute Board.
To promote education for health professionals in the area of infertility
and pelvic surgery, Dr Allan founded the biennial Pelvic Surgery and
Infertility Conference at The Wesley Hospital and established the
Medical Student teaching program at the Wesley IVF Unit in 1990.
Currently students from UQ, Griffith and Bond Universities all receive
training in gynaecology and infertility through the Wesley Monash IVF
unit.
Dr Allan maintains a strong connection with the Scottsdale Mayo Clinic,
USA and has presented at the clinic's annual conference in Advanced
Laparoscopic and Gynaecologic Surgery for many years.
ETHICS
In recognition of the importance of maintaining ethical standards in
medical practice, Dr Allan is an active member of the UnitingCare Health
Human Research Ethics Committee who reviews all research on the Wesley
Hospital campus.
EXPERTISE
Since obtaining his specialty in obstetrics and gynaecology in 1984, he
has been a driving force in the treatment of patients undergoing
assisted reproductive technology.
His interests and expertise include endoscopic and laser surgery,
endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, pre implantation genetic
diagnosis and male infertility.
Currently although his main focus is in infertility and IVF he continues
to treat all of his past general gynaecology patients.
