Infertility & The Over 37 Age GroupThere is a dramatic decline in the conception rate in women after 37 years. This is due partly to poorer egg quality and uterine receptivity so that the embryo is less likely to implant. Women aged 16-26 have approximately a 33% chance of conceiving each month, but women aged > 40 have only a 5% chance. Older women requiring hormones to achieve ovulation, often require larger doses of these medications as their ovaries are not as responsive. The known miscarriage rate is approximately 20% but in the older women > 40 it can be as high as 50%. The incidence of fetal abnormalities also increases with the age of the mother. Pregnancy and obstetric complications are also increased in the older age group but with modern obstetrics the risks can be reduced.
