Wesley Monash IVF
The birth of a new partnership
In October 2004, Monash IVF and The Wesley Hospital IVF service announced
their new joint venture partnership.
Queensland IVF Services was established at The Wesley Hospital in 1988
by the current Clinical Director, Dr John Allan and renamed The Wesley
IVF Service in 1999 when the unit was acquired by The Wesley Hospital.
"The Wesley IVF unit has always been dedicated to providing an excellent
personalised and caring service," said Dr John Allan who will remain
Clinical Director in the new joint venture. "Wesley IVF staff look
forward to working with the combined skills and expertise of the Monash
team".
In 1997, the unit achieved the world's first pregnancy using sperm obtained
from frozen seminiferous tubules, a significant benefit in the treatment
of male infertility. This ongoing commitment to scientific research that
includes joint studies with the Queensland University of Technology funded
by the Wesley Research Institute will be strengthened by the joint venture.
"The partnership between the 2 units has resulted from a desire to
provide a personalised but high quality scientific IVF service,"
said Dr Allan. "The increasing complexities associated with ART especially
in the areas of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) and quality laboratory
control make it difficult for smaller stand alone units to meet ongoing
ethical, legislative and accreditation requirements but the joint venture
will ensure these criteria are met.
Monash IVF's Managing Director, Ms Donna Howlett states "Monash IVF's
part ownership and management of the Wesley unit reflects our commitment
to sharing intellectual know how and will benefit The Wesley IVF Service
through profit share and funds for vital research utilising university
backing. At Monash IVF we are committed to providing standards of excellence
in quality service, care and advice using the world's best standards and
applying them to all clinic quality systems. Participation in Monash IVF's
Quality Assurance Program will ensure ongoing standards at Wesley IVF
are achieved and maintained in the management of a quality program".
Ms Howlett further states, "The potential for staff exchange between
programs will further enhance our commitment to ongoing education and
the patients will benefit from our quality assurance, clinical, technological
and research expertise. The opportunity for technology transfer will also
provide an immediate benefit for Wesley IVF Services and its patients,
as it will enable access to ART technologies that once tested and proven
in the research environment can be made available clinically to all patients".
Monash IVF offers one of the most comprehensive infertility and genetics
services for men and women with Victorian clinics located at Richmond,
Clayton, Geelong and country Victoria and Queensland clinics located at
Sunnybank in Brisbane, Southport on the Gold Coast and Rockhampton on
the Capricorn Coast.
One of the key aims for the joint venture will be to continually assess
and improve the treatments offered to ensure patients achieve the best
possible results. The joint collaboration of Wesley IVF and Monash IVF
will strengthen the ability to maintain a strong focus on customer service,
quality systems and the practise of responsible ART.
